In order to shorten the length of an outbreak of cold sores many people choose to use cold sore medicine, and the type of medicine used is usually dependent on which stage the cold sores are found at. For instance the first time cold sores appear on a person the outbreak tends to be the most severe they will ever experience. During this first outbreak oral cold sore medication is normally used whereas subsequent outbreaks can be treated using a topical medication.

There are two different topical creams, both of which have been passed by the Food and Drugs Administration in the USA and both of which have been found to shorten the length of an outbreak of cold sores.

The first of these topical creams is acyclovir 5% topical cream and this has been subject to several studies and it was found to shorten the time it takes the sores to heal by around half a day. If the gums are also infected it can reduce the symptoms from fourteen to ten days, which provides a great relief for the person suffering. It should be noted however when using acyclovir orally that even though the outbreak time is reduced the medicine will not help with the pain so it is advisable to take analgesics or other over the counter pain killing drug.

The second type of topical cream is penciclover 1% which can also reduce the time it takes an outbreak of cold sores to heal. However in order for this cream to be successful it must be applied every two hours for approximately four days before the sufferer notices any difference.

There is extra reassurance to be had when using either of these creams as they have been passed by the Food and Drug Administration which means they will not have any side effects as some medicines do.
